DURANGO, Colo. (AP) - A winter storm has dropped over a foot of snow in parts of southwestern Colorado, shutting down schools and knocking down power lines.

The Durango Herald (https://bit.ly/1Ac1QwM) reported that about 9,000 La Plata Electric Association customers were without power during Tuesday’s storm. Spokeswoman Indiana Reed says that’s the highest number of outages the utility has seen since 2007.

Schools in and around Durango cancelled classes because of the snow.

Snowfall in La Plata County ranged from 5 to 14 inches.
