ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The State University of New York’s board of trustees has named Alain Kaloyeros (CAL’-oh-yair-ohs) the first president of SUNY Polytechnic Institute.

Kaloyeros had been the driving force behind building Albany NanoTech and the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering. The institution, which used to be part of the University at Albany, became SUNY Poly last year after merging with SUNY IT in Utica.

Kaloyeros received his Ph.D. in experimental condensed matter physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1987. He was recruited to the SUNY Graduate Research Initiative the next year.
