PHOENIX (AP) - A 17-year-old youth who faces trial as an adult in the killing of his 15-year-old girlfriend has pleaded not guilty.

A Maricopa County Superior Court spokeswoman said Robert Duffell entered his plea Thursday.

Duffell is charged with first-degree murder in the Dec. 27 shooting death of Leah Costa of Buckeye.

The girl had been missing before her body was found, and authorities said she had run away from her home with Duffell on Christmas Eve.

Duffell is also charged with burglary in a Dec, 26 home invasion in Tonopah.

He was arrested while walking along Interstate 10 west of Buckeye.
