BUTTE, Mont. (AP) - Madison County officials say a fire early Tuesday has destroyed the Sportsman’s Lodge casino and restaurant near Ennis that was a popular destination for fisherman and other recreationists.

Emergency Management Director Chris Mumme tells The Montana Standard the fire was reported at about 2:30 a.m. and crews were still mopping up at 9:15 a.m.

Mumme says some exterior walls of the historic building were still standing, but the roof collapsed. Rental cabins around the lodge were spared.

Four crews of volunteer firefighters helped the Madison Valley Rural Fire Department fight the blaze. Mumme says crews had to rotate while seeking medical support due to heavy smoke.

Transportation workers put sand and gravel on the ground because the spray from their water hoses was freezing, making the area around the building very slippery.
