NEW YORK (AP) - Investigators say candles caused a fire that damaged a memorial to Eric Garner.

Garner’s stepfather, Benjamin Carr, tells the Staten Island Advance (https://bit.ly/1GqyraN ) that he thinks the fire was intentionally set. However, fire officials have declared it an accident.

The fire occurred around 10:30 p.m. Monday after a vigil led by the Rev. Al Sharpton. On Tuesday morning, all that remained intact was a wreath bearing Garner’s name.

The memorial was set up after Garner died in July while in police custody. The decision to not indict a police officer in his death sparked widespread protests.

Carr and a friend said they hoped to reconstruct the memorial by Wednesday.
