RENO, Nev. (AP) - A 43-year-old Reno man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the 2013 hatchet murder of a Gardnerville woman.

Washoe District Judge Linda Stiglich sentenced Robert Owns to the maximum penalty after he pleaded guilty in November to first-degree murder in the killing of 22-year-old Lacee Shupe.

He also pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of the landlord of a Cold Springs residence where he and Shupe were renting rooms.

Police say 39-year-old Josh Able told Owens he had to move out by July 1 because he couldn’t pay his rent.

Owens attacked Able with the axe as he slept early that morning, hacking his head and body before Shupe tried to intervene.

Shupe died. Able survived but his family says he suffers from memory loss.
