SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Republican Gov. Susana Martinez says the state’s leaders have no greater calling than to build a better future for New Mexico’s children.

She says that means the state needs to improve its public schools and create a more diverse economy that brings new jobs and encourages an array of different industries.

Martinez called on lawmakers to choose courage over comfort and change over stagnation as they look to pave a path for improving the state.

The governor said the greatest challenges lawmakers will face during the 60-day session will be finding ways to make New Mexico more competitive when it comes to economic development and less reliant on federal spending.
