PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island Education Commissioner Deborah Gist says she has been informed that she’s a finalist for school superintendent in her hometown, Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Gist said in a statement Tuesday she’s “enthusiastic” about the status of efforts to improve Rhode Island’s education system and “extremely confident’ in new Gov. Gina Raimondo’s leadership, but also that being considered for the Tulsa job “was too exciting to forgo.”

Raimondo has said she wasn’t planning to make a quick decision on an education commissioner for her new administration.

The Tulsa school board said in a statement Tuesday its two finalists are Gist and Millard House II, a former deputy Tulsa superintendent who leads an education nonprofit in Charlotte, North Carolina. The board said it expects to announce its choice by the end of the month.
