BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A baby from western New York has become the second child to die from the flu in New York state.

Erie County health officials report Tuesday that the infant was under six months old and died over the New Year’s holiday. Authorities say children younger than six months are too young for the flu vaccine.

The New York State Health Department says the Erie County death is the state’s second pediatric death this flu season. As of Jan. 10, the flu was widespread, showing up in 56 of the state’s 62 counties and New York City.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that this year’s flu vaccine is only about 23 percent effective, but officials still recommend that anyone over six months old be vaccinated.
