ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (AP) - Michigan authorities say a 53-year-old man with a history of mental illness and drug and alcohol abuse used hammers to beat his 87-year-old father and 85-year-old mother to death.

Jeffrey B. Maurer was arraigned Wednesday by video link in Rochester Hills District Court on first-degree murder charges. He refused to speak, and Judge Nancy T. Carniak ordered him held without bond until his next court appearance Feb. 3.

Authorities say the couple’s daughter called Monday, saying she’d been unable to reach her parents. Oakland County sheriff’s deputies went to their home in the Detroit suburb of Rochester Hills and found the bodies of William and Gayle Maurer in a vehicle in the garage.

Investigators say the couple died of blows to the head.
