LAKE ST. LOUIS, Mo. (AP) - A 14-year-old boy remains hospitalized, but is awake and responsive after being pulled from any icy lake after several minutes under water.

John Smith and a friend on Monday were walking on thin ice at a lake in the St. Charles County town of Lake St. Louis, Missouri, when the ice broke. John’s friend was rescued quickly but by the time emergency crews got John out of the water, he had been under for 15 minutes.

He wasn’t breathing and had no pulse, so rescuers started CPR and used a defibrillator to resuscitate him. He was airlifted to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1zwIh77 ) reports that the hospital released a statement from John’s mother saying he is awake and responding to commands.
