PROVO, Utah (AP) - BYU and Michigan State announced plans Wednesday to meet on the football field for the first time in the schools’ history.

BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe said the Cougars will travel to East Lansing, Michigan, on Oct. 8, 2016. The Cougars will host the Spartans in Provo on Sept. 12, 2020.

Holmoe says he’s excited about the new series with one of the top programs in the Big Ten.

Michigan State was founded in 1855, started playing football in 1896 and joined the Big Ten in 1953. The Spartans have won or shared six national championships.

BYU was founded in 1875 and began playing football in 1922. The Cougars won a national title in 1984.
