GRANITE CITY, Ill. (AP) - A bridge that carried travelers over the Chain of Rocks canal in Southern Illinois for 50 years has been demolished.

Illinois transportation officials closed a stretch of Interstate 270 near Granite City for about three hours Tuesday before blasting the eastbound span of the bridge. The western span will be demolished at a future date.

The bridges no longer are needed because a new span over the canal was completed last year.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports (https://bit.ly/1zujgte ) about 150 people turned out to view the explosion. Kim Green of Granite City brought a camera to snap some pictures.

Green says the demolition will change the area’s landscape. Green says: “It’s not going to be the same with it gone.”
