BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A lawyer known for personal-injury lawsuits is taking on a utility over the destruction of trees in Oakland County.

Geoffrey Fieger says he’s filed three lawsuits against DTE Energy, accusing the company of a “secret scorched earth” strategy to remove old, leafy hardwoods in Bloomfield Hills and Bloomfield Township.

Fieger says the cutting began in December. Homeowner Inge Gray tells The Detroit News (https://bit.ly/1EsTAwo ) that dozens of trees have been removed behind her backyard.

Sister Bridget Bearss at Academy of the Sacred Heart school says tree limbs can knock down power lines, but the work seems excessive. She says students are asking, “Why did they cut down our trees?”

DTE spokesman Scott Simons won’t comment directly on the lawsuits but says the utility follows state guidelines when clearing trees.
