CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say a Mason City man has been sentenced to 21 years in federal prison without parole after trading his dog for a gun he intended to use to shoot his son.

KCCI-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1xAezIZ ) 58-year-old Bill Douglas Thorne was sentenced Wednesday for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

Federal officials say Thorne traded the dog for a .22 caliber rifle on July 24, 2012. He then asked others to hide the gun in a Mason City park, but police located the gun when he was arrested on harassment charges.

Officials say Thorne was previously convicted in 1997 in Florida on five counts of burglary and one count of armed burglary.
