SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Utah man who admitted killing an 85-year-old woman and setting her house on fire last January has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

KUTV-TV reports (https://tinyurl.com/o26ftbf) more than a dozen of Shirley Sharp’s family members wore purple in Sharp’s member in 3rd District Court on Tuesday when Judge Randall Skanchy sentenced 50-year-old Christen Spencer.

Spencer pleaded guilty to aggravated murder in November in a plea deal with prosecutors. In exchange they agreed to drop several other charges, including aggravated burglary, kidnapping, robbery and arson.

Authorities say Spencer hit Sharp in the head with a tire iron 17 times at her home in Murray. He then stole Sharp’s car only to later return, strangle her, and light the house on fire.
