LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles’ City Council has voted to ban alcohol ads on bus shelters and benches in an effort to discourage underage drinking.

The prohibition would apply to new advertising contracts.

Supporters say high school and college students who use buses to get to classes can face a barrage of alcohol ads that glamorize drinking.

With widespread concern over underage drinking, Councilman Paul Koretz says the ban is a good place for the city to step in and prevent those ads from potentially influencing students.

The ban passed unanimously Tuesday is similar to ad prohibitions in San Francisco and Philadelphia.

With the vote, the measure heads to Mayor Eric Garcetti for consideration.
