EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - A 24-year-old Snohomish County man has been charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of his 83-year-old grandmother.

The Seattle Times reports (https://is.gd/FD4W6A ) that Shane Hathaway was charged Wednesday in Everett District Court in the Jan. 15 death of Betty Sorg. The young man was also charged with second-degree attempted murder in an attack on his grandfather, James Sorg, who is also 83.

Court documents say Hathaway has a history of mental illness, drug use and violence. Police say he had been living with his grandparents in Mill Creek, Washington.

The night of the attack, prosecutors say the grandfather called 911 to say his grandson had attacked him with a butcher knife, stabbing him in the chest. The older man said he was able to fight off the young man and lock a door but didn’t know what had happened to his wife. Court documents say police found Betty Sorg dead in her grandson’s bedroom.

Hathaway is being held on $2 million bail.
