BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has proposed creation of an education tax credit for charitable contributions that help public and private schools.

Cuomo included the proposal in his combined budget and state of the state address in Albany Wednesday, shortly after the state Senate passed an education investment tax credit bill.

Taxpayers would be able to claim a credit for donations to public schools, school improvement organizations or scholarship programs for students attending religious or other eligible private schools.

The Catholic church has been pushing for the legislation, while the state’s teachers unions have opposed it, saying it diverts money from public schools.
