NEW YORK (AP) - Police say a 61-year-old New Jersey man died after falling down an elevator shaft in an Upper West Side Manhattan building under construction.

It happened just after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday inside a 4-story residential building on West 70th Street.

Police say the man, identified as Frank Dragotta, of Morganville, was found at the bottom of the shaft unconscious and unresponsive. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Department of Buildings told NBC New York the man fell as he tried to look down the shaft.
