PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Gov. Gina Raimondo plans to nominate an executive who led the transformation of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s regulatory branch to be Rhode Island’s director of business regulations.

Raimondo announced Wednesday she’ll ask the Senate to confirm Sidney “Macky” McCleary. McCleary is the deputy commissioner for environmental quality at the Connecticut agency.

Raimondo says McCleary will leverage his experience to streamline the state’s business regulations, attract companies to Rhode Island and encourage existing businesses to expand.

The director of the Department of Business Regulations oversees the implementation of state laws mandating the regulation and licensing of businesses, professions and occupations.

In Connecticut, McCleary worked to make permitting processes more effective and efficient. He previously co-founded a startup clean energy and green building development company, EmPower CES.
