NEW YORK (AP) - Rescuers have freed a worker who was pinned in a construction hole that collapsed at a job site in downtown Manhattan.

Fire officials say the worker was digging in the 12-foot trench on Grand Street at about 4 p.m. Wednesday when the ground collapsed and he was buried waist-high under soil and rock.

Officials say the man was alert and conscious as emergency service units worked to free him.

The man was finally pulled out of the hole about an hour later.

He was hospitalized in stable condition.
