STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Starkville aldermen have overridden the mayor’s veto of their earlier decision to bar city employees from buying buy health insurance coverage for unmarried domestic partners, including those of the same sex.

Mayor Parker Wiseman vetoed the action. It took five votes to override the veto.

Wiseman says he’s unaware of any employee signing up their partner for insurance coverage

After the original approval, a gay-rights group praised Starkville for becoming the first Mississippi city to offer insurance coverage for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender partners of municipal employees.
