NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a 23-year-old New Orleans gang member has pleaded guilty to drug and weapons violations.

U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite says Jacobi Boyd pleaded guilty Wednesday. Authorities say Boyd was a member of the Young Melph Mafia gang. He allegedly conspired with others between 2007 and 2014 to deal in drugs.

U.S. District Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt set sentencing for April 15. Boyd faces up to 40 years in prison for the drug conspiracy charge and 20 years for the gun possession charge.

New Orleans law enforcement agencies in recent years have teamed up to fight what they call dangerous gang activity in New Orleans. Authorities hope that by targeting gang members they can reduce crime more generally in New Orleans.
