NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) - A New London man convicted of murder in the bludgeoning deaths of a couple has been sentenced to 42 years in prison.

The Day of New London reports (https://bit.ly/1BJRhqx ) that Joel Matthews was sentenced Wednesday in New London Superior Court. He pleaded guilty in November to two counts of murder for the bludgeoning deaths of Noel Starback and Sherry Roush at their apartment on April 13, 2012.

First responders to a fire at the apartment found the 57-year-old Starback in the kitchen with a significant head trauma and a broken arm. Further inside the apartment, they found the 50-year-old Roush, who was dead.

The 32-year-old Matthews confessed he killed the couple with a baseball bat after a day of drinking. He returned and set fire to the house to cover up the crime.
