DONALDSONVILLE, La. (AP) - Bail of more than $1 million each has been set for the three people arrested in the shooting injury of a Louisiana deputy sheriff.

Authorities say Chadwick Schwender, 27, is accused of shooting Deputy James Atkins in the hand, and John McMullen, 35, and Jennifer McGhee, 27, the two people with Schwender at the time of Tuesday’s shooting, all were booked into Ascension Parish Jail on multiple counts, including attempted first-degree murder.

The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/1JgRRNp ) Atkins had stopped the three Florida residents in a stolen car in response to a shoplifting complaint from the Donaldsonville Wal-Mart. Atkins had just gotten out of his unit and was standing behind the car door when he was shot in the left hand in a hail of bullets from a .44-caliber Magnum revolver.

Atkins, a five-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, managed to make it to cover at a nearby home, where the resident called 911.

McMullen is wanted in Lake Wales, Florida. on numerous counts, including attempted first-degree murder and arson in the beating and robbery of a motel owner on Saturday.
