TORRANCE, Calif. (AP) - A former student who was shot after pointing a fake gun at police at a Los Angeles-area college may have been attempting “suicide-by-cop.”
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says 18-year-old Peyton Dingman remains hospitalized Friday in critical condition but he’s expected to survive.
Authorities say Dingman was at El Camino Community College in Torrance on Thursday when he called 911, told campus police he had a gun and was holding a woman hostage in a parking structure.
Authorities say when officers arrived, Dingman pointed what appeared to be a gun and the officers shot him in the upper torso.
The weapon turned out to be a pellet gun wrapped in black electrical tape. Detectives say they found a suicide note at his home.
