WESTBROOK, Conn. (AP) - A 23-year-old Connecticut man has been arrested after authorities say he crashed his car into a vacant house in Westbrook and started a fire.

Westbrook Fire Chief Michael Jenkins tells WVIT-TV (https://bit.ly/1za5aOn) the car struck the house on Boston Post Road just before 4:30 a.m. Sunday, hitting a gas main. The house and the car caught fire. No injuries were reported.

A neighbor said he heard a loud bang and an explosion.

Crews from four fire departments spent more than four hours at the scene. Jenkins said the house fire was extinguished relatively quickly but it took longer to safely shut off the gas main and remove the car.

Rodrigo Sousa of Old Saybrook is charged driving under the influence, driving too fast and criminal mischief. He appears in court Feb. 13. It’s not immediately known if he has a lawyer.
