HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii Gov. David Ige is planning to have affordable housing built near the rail transit system that’s under construction in Honolulu.

Ige says the state is the largest owner of parcels along the proposed transit route. He plans to create an Office of Planning to evaluate those parcels and build affordable homes.

Ige said in his State of the State address Monday that he will add $100 million to the rental assistance fund. He says that money can be leveraged to build rental homes for working families.

Ige says he wants rail to succeed in Hawaii. But he says cost containment is important before officials ask for more money.

Ige says affordable housing is one of his administration’s main goals.
