RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Republican U.S. Sen. Richard Burr is getting his 2016 re-election bid in North Carolina underway with campaign fundraising events and by hiring a campaign staff.

Burr announced Monday he would hold campaign events in several North Carolina cities over the next few months. He also plans events in Washington, the first of which will occur Wednesday.

Key members of Burr’s previous campaigns are working again for him - general consultant Paul Shumaker, pollster Glen Bolger and media consultant Doug McAuliffe. Fundraising chiefs Jonathan Brooks and Jim McCray worked for recently elected U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis’ campaign.

Burr is from Winston-Salem and joined the Senate in 2004 after 10 years in the U.S. House. He’s chairman of the Senate intelligence committee after the GOP won the chamber’s majority in November.
