RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The commissioner of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association says he’s leaving for a position with the National Federation of State High School Associations.

The NCHSAA said Monday that Davis Whitfield will be the chief operating officer of the NFHS starting in July.

He will replace Jim Tenopir, who is retiring after five years.

NFHS executive director Bob Gardner says Whitfield “has proven to be an innovative leader” in North Carolina.

Among the highlights of Whitfield’s time at the NCHSAA were a new transfer policy for students, a restructuring of the organization’s handbook and the development of a committee to evaluate the efficiency of the NCHSAA’s policies and procedures.

He previously spent 7½ years working for the Atlantic Coast Conference.
