PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Public and parochial schools in Philadelphia will be closed Tuesday along with all city offices due to the nor’easter expected to descend on the area.

Mayor Michael Nutter announced Monday night that the closure applied to city, council and court operations, as well as public and Archdiocese of Philadelphia schools.

He said forecasters were now projecting 6 to 10 inches of snow in the city, a reduction from earlier estimates, but still expect strong winds.

Nutter said officials didn’t want schoolchildren and school buses out when crews were expected to be clearing snow expected to fall overnight.

The city earlier declared a snow emergency, ordering vehicles removed from snow emergency routes.

City public and Catholic schools dismissed students at noon Monday, and nonessential city personnel were dismissed two hours later.
