WELCH, W.Va. (AP) - A Russian coal company has paid more than $1 million in back taxes owed to McDowell County.

Mechel Bluestone Inc. paid $800,000 to the county in June 2014 after the sheriff’s department filed a lawsuit seeking $1.2 million in back taxes. A payment plan was set up and a bank trust account was established to pay the remaining amount owed.

Sheriff Martin B. West said Monday in a news release that the tax bill was paid in full as of Dec. 17.

West says the tax revenue goes to the budgets of the county Board of Education and the County Commission.
