BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) - A Gallatin County judge has granted a motion filed by defense attorneys seeking to be removed from the assault, attempted rape and escape case against Kevin Briggs.

District Judge Mike Salvagni on Monday granted the motion filed by Chuck Watson and Ashley and Todd Whipple. The motion was sealed. Watson said money was not an issue, and that something came up professionally that prevented them from moving forward with Briggs’ case.

Briggs’ trial was scheduled to begin next month, but Salvagni questioned whether a new attorney would be able to get up to speed in time. Watson said he was willing to work with the new attorneys on a smooth transition.

Salvagni sent Briggs’ case to the public defender’s office.
