WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - The Oceania Football Confederation says a Fiji player has died in a swimming accident during the Oceania under-17 championships in Samoa.

The OFC said in a statement that Shalit Muni Reddy died Tuesday at Savaii. Reddy went missing while swimming during a Fiji team excursion. His body was found a short time later and efforts to revive him failed.

OFC president David Chung said the death was a tragedy that would be felt throughout Oceania.

Chung said “everyone at the OFC is in total shock at what has happened. No words can fully express our grief and dismay at seeing this happen.”
