LAS VEGAS (AP) - A tally of the homeless is scheduled overnight Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning in Las Vegas, when volunteers fan out in annual effort to count every person living on the streets.

Organizers say the eighth Southern Nevada Homeless Census aims to collect data crucial for Clark County to qualify for federal grants for homeless programs.

The 2014 homeless census found more than 9,400 homeless people staying in shelters or on the streets in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson and unincorporated county territory.

That was up 28 percent from 2013, when 7,355 people were counted.

The tally was 13,000 in January 2009.
