SAN BRUNO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a 58-year-old inmate has died in a jailhouse confrontation with San Francisco County sheriff’s deputies.

The San Mateo County coroner’s office says the man died after deputies attempted to search him Monday at Jail No. 5 in San Bruno.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1wyXRYR) the inmate, whose name was not released, apparently had an envelope in his hand that the deputies were trying to examine. The man reportedly struggled with several deputies.

Chief Deputy Kathy Gorwood, a sheriff’s spokeswoman, confirmed the death but said she could not comment until all investigations were complete.

The newspaper says relatives have not been notified, nor has the cause of death been determined.

Gorwood said she could not say why the inmate was being held at the jail.
