LOS ANGELES (AP) - A jury has awarded $3 million to the father of a man who was stabbed to death by a fellow mental patient at a Los Angeles-area hospital.

City News Service says the panel on Monday awarded punitive damages. Other damages were awarded last week, bringing the total in the negligence case to $5.7 million.

The father of 48-year-old Dean Camacho sued Pacifica Hospital of the Valley in Sun Valley after a delusional roommate used a homemade weapon to kill his son in 2011.

The attorney for Joseph Camacho of Stockton says the victim was nearly decapitated and was found in a bathroom.

Attorneys for the hospital argued that the attack couldn’t be foreseen and the hospital wasn’t responsible.
