GEISMAR, La. (AP) - Methanex Corp. has begun producing methanol from its 1.1 million-ton plant in Geismar, and expects to ramp up to full production in the next few weeks.

The plant successfully produced methanol, used in making plastics, on Jan. 24. Methanex moved the plant from Punta Arenas, Chile.

John Florien, president and chief executive officer, tells The Advocate (https://bit.ly/1CumNHD) the startup marks another key milestone in the company’s plan, announced in 2013, to grow capacity by approximately 3.3 million tons over three years. Methanex also is making progress in the construction of its second Geismar plant. Production at that 1.1 million-ton facility should begin in the latter part of the first quarter of 2016.
