MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - A 25-year-old Missoula man is charged with assaulting his girlfriend’s 3-year-old daughter, causing black eyes and bruising.

The Missoulian reports (https://bit.ly/15Fs3eS ) Nickelous Eric Hopfner made an initial appearance in Justice Court Monday. He did not enter a plea to felony assault on a minor and his bail was set at $20,000.

Prosecutors say someone called 911 on Saturday to report the girl had black eyes. The girl said Hopfner punched and hit her.

The girl’s mother told officers she noticed the child’s bruises on Jan. 20 or 21, but did not seek medical attention because the girl was not in discomfort and the injuries appeared to be healing.

Court records say Hopfner denied injuring the girl and said he was out of state. However, texts on his phone indicated he was in Missoula.
