MOUNT OLIVE, W.Va. (AP) - A Mount Olive Correctional Complex correctional officer has been charged with stealing copper from the maximum-security prison.

West Virginia State Police tell media outlets that 29-year-old Lyle Russell Lesher Jr. of Lansing is accused of stealing more than 1,275 pounds of copper rods and wires from the prison’s roof and from behind a building at the complex in 2013.

State police say Lesher and his father allegedly sold the copper for more than $4,250.

West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety spokesman Lawrence Messina says Lesher has been suspended pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
