RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A winter storm dumped an inch or two of snow across much of central and eastern Virginia, forcing many schools to close.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for those regions Tuesday. The weather service said snow was expected to taper off around mid-day as temperatures climb above freezing.

Virginia airports canceled many flights to the Northeast, where a blizzard was expected to leave up to 2 feet of snow in some areas. Flights from Northeast airports into Virginia also were canceled.

Greyhound suspended bus service to New York until noon Wednesday.

Virginia Department of Transportation crews were out in force, treating slippery highways and roads. Officials urged motorists to allow extra time to reach their destination.
