MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Department of Labor says the state’s unemployment rate dropped slightly last month to 4.2 percent.

That’s down from 4.4 percent in November and the national average of 5.6 percent in December.

The Labor Department says based on preliminary 2014 data, the annual average jobless rate for last year was 3.9 percent, which is down five-tenths of a percentage point from 2013.

Labor Commissioner Annie Noonan says while only the preliminary 2014 data is in, it shows Vermont’s continued recovery from the recession of 2007. But she says not all Vermonters or economic sectors have benefited from the recent economic gains. Some industries, such as construction, have not yet recovered and areas outside of northwestern Vermont have not seen the economic growth that areas in and around Burlington have.
