FAIRFIELD, Ala. (AP) - A steel processing company has announced that employees in suburban Birmingham could soon be laid off.

US Steel announced an adjustment in operations Monday and company spokeswoman Courtney Boone told AL.com impacted employees will informed on or after March 29. Employees at a plant in Lone Star, Texas have also been put on notice. Company officials say they’re looking to temporarily reduce operating levels and US Steel has warned more than 1,900 employees at the Alabama and Texas plants.

Company officials said in a release that the adjustment is linked to “softening market conditions that reflect the cyclical nature of the energy market.”

President of United Steelworkers Local 1013 told Al.com that local union officials are meeting with representatives of the company, which is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
