NEW YORK (AP) - Firefighters have rescued a boy who was stranded on ice on the frozen Bronx River.

It happened Thursday afternoon at Whitlock and Westchester avenues in Soundview.

Officials say rescuers used a ladder and backup life preserver to retrieve the boy, who was standing on top of the ice about 10 to 15 feet from shore.

A girl who was with the boy had fallen through the ice but made it to shore before rescuers arrived.

The children were checked out at a hospital and are expected to be fine.
