TEXARKANA, Texas (AP) - A Northeast Texas police officer has been cleared of wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of a burglary suspect who was holding a spoon.

Texarkana police on Thursday announced an internal review found Officer Brent Lawing’s use of force was consistent with department policy. Sgt. Michael Jones says Lawing will return to duty on Monday.

Lawing on Dec. 15 fatally shot 35-year-old Dennis Grigsby while investigating a reported break-in at a home. Police say Lawing confronted Grigsby in the garage of a resident who summoned help.

Authorities have said Grigsby refused to stop and advanced toward Lawing with a 7-inch metal object that looked like a knife. Police later determined Grigsby had a spoon.

His mother, Evelyn Grigsby, has said her son lived nearby and had mental illness issues.
