MADISON, Ala. (AP) - Madison County Police say a man who died in a police-involved shooting was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Sgt. Ben Chaffin says 61-year-old Paul Walls died of a self-inflicted wound inside his vehicle Wednesday while deputies were responding to a domestic disturbance.

Authorities have said officers were talking to a woman at the residence when Walls drove by the home. Investigators said officers pursued him to the end of the street, where he fired a shotgun. The officers returned fire. Chaffin says authorities believe the man had violated a protective order.

Chaffin says it’s unclear if any rounds fired by police struck Walls. The officers are on paid administrative leave and the county sheriff’s department is investigating Walls’ death.
