CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Thirty-eight attorneys, prosecutors, local court judges and commissioners are vying for three vacant state judge positions left by the appointment of judges to the new Nevada Court of Appeals.

Nevada Supreme Court spokesman Michael Sommermeyer says 25 applications were received by Wednesday for two open Eighth Judicial District Court seats in Las Vegas.

Thirteen candidates are seeking appointment to the Ninth District seat in Minden.

One lawyer applied for both.

The state Commission on Judicial Selection will conduct background checks and public interviews the week of Feb. 23 in Carson City for the Douglas County seat, and the week of March 16 in Las Vegas for the Clark County seats.

Gov. Brian Sandoval will make the final selection.

Appointees will be paid $160,000 and face a retention election in 2016.
