NEW YORK (AP) - Authorities say seven people have been indicted in a New York City gambling crackdown.

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown says the gambling rings took in hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in wagers on sporting events - including professional and college basketball, football, professional baseball and hockey.

Five people are charged with running an illegal sports betting enterprise. Two other defendants are charged separately with promoting gambling through a related endeavor.

Police Commissioner William Bratton says gambling rings exploit victims. He says they often end up owing large sums of money and face threats of violence for not making payments on time.
