CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A megachurch in Charlotte has spent $10 million to buy a shopping center in Matthews.

Multiple media outlets reported that Elevation Church closed on the purchase of Matthews Plaza Shopping Center on Wednesday. Its Matthews campus is located at the shopping center, as are several stores and a restaurant.

Elevation chief financial officer Chunks Corbett said in an emailed statement Thursday that the purchase gives the church flexibility to grow. He did not provide other details.

Elevation Church was founded in 2006 and has 10 campuses in the Charlotte area led by Pastor Steven Furtick.

The church’s most recent audit, in 2013, shows that the church had more than $25 million in revenue from general offerings. The church also had more than $14 million worth of construction in progress. Most of that is for a new campus in the Lake Norman area.

Operations pastor Joshua Blackson said the church is working with the store owners about their leases.
